Unsquare Dance

Unsquare Dance

Imagination, creativity and hard work are the hallmarks of all true art forms. Take the name given to this piece, Unsquare Dance. It is borrowed from the title of a music track from the jazz musician Dave Brubeck. A true creative genius. Google it on UTube and allow it to create a mood in you while the story of the squares unfolds.

With a square defined as a rectangle with four equal sides, how many squares can you find in the two dimensional image posted above?

Well, one square is the entire picture you see and inside that square are sixteen smaller ones giving us a total so far of seventeen squares.

But lets get creative.

How many squares are there composed of four adjacent smaller ones. Each corner of the large square contains four small ones and together they create squares. Four in total. But with overlap there are nine squares in the diagram each composed of four smaller ones. Don't forget the four little ones that form the center of the sketch.

So our total now is seventeen and nine - twenty six.

Look again at the image. Are there other squares to be found?

Yes.

Each corner has a cluster composed of three small squares across and three down. In total there are four such squares each composed of nine small ones.

So our total is thirty. The total number of squares in the picture, with overlap of course,  is thirty.

But not so fast!

When this exercise in perception and reality was presented to one specific audience, they saw a total of fifty five squares.

Without adding lines and remembering that the image is only two dimensional, where did they find the remaining squares that nearly doubled the total count?

Our perception becomes our reality and we respond that those elements in our lives that to us at least are real.

And so it is with Michael Campbell, the main protagonist in the novel Capistrano. He sees himself as being destined to do more than just participate in corporate life. He has a dream and he follows that dream with all of his heart and soul. Take the journey of discovery with Michael. You will the enjoy his quest for self discovery.

Oh yes, the focus by some on the fifty five squares will conclude after you have a chance to think, and think creatively, about it.

The Road Less Traveled

Robert Frost, the American Poet, wrote of the challenges each person faces in life and he used the metaphor of roads that diverge in the woods to describe the choices we all make. Some of us prefer the well beaten path because it is known and it is safe. Others however choose to walk on the wild side in the sense that they seek routes that are challenging. They make decisions that place them on new routes in life, new routes that involve personal stretch and individual flexing of both old and new abilities to meet clearly defined goals. And in the process they find out more about themselves, about the fact that they possess more of the right stuff to not only survive but to prevail in the face of adversity.

And as Robert Frost said, the choice they make creates all the difference in both the quality and depth of personal understanding throughout the lives they lead.

People who choose the road less traveled learn that the sweet elixir of life is to be found in the process of becoming and not merely in the final results that efforts achieve.
CAPISTRANO the novel
represents just such a road less traveled

Pioneer Plaque

When America launched the Pioneer space probe some decades ago a plaque was fastened to the skin of the space vehicle. For the benefit of any alien life that might be encountered is the depiction of the source of the machine in their midst.
Earth is positioned as the third satellite from the sun, a small star in the Milky Way. Also presented are frontal views of the earthly creatures responsible for the unexpected present from the sky. A cursory examination of the two living things will suggest that they are somewhat different in physical structure.
Whether the foreign beings will be able to attach any significance to the anatomical variations is unknown.
However even a neophyte student of biology knows that for all flora and fauna on this planet earth the major focus in their lives is to perpetuate their kind, both genus and species.
Human societies from antiquity that failed to recognize this either through ignorance or elaborate superstition  have been relegated to minor foot notes in the journals kept by archaeologists of their digs.
So sex matters if any society is to be sustained.
Add to this overarching certainty the hormonal fluctuations that male and female members of the species experience throughout their lives and the behaviors that result and one arrives at a statement of power. The power of action prompted by the union of biological imperative and  chemical driven desire.
Capistrano, the novel provides the backdrop for the exercising of just that kind of power. The people of means by virtue of their business acumen fuse with those who possess the same motives, the same opportunities and the same means to fulfill their dreams. The result is a garish panoply of the human condition in microcosm.

Mould Memory

Mould Memory

People who hover over automobiles either by profession or passion will tell us that modern bumpers made of composite materials posses what they term, mould memory.

Simply stated it means that if a bumper gets pushed out of shape it can be returned to its original appearance by applying appropriate pressure to it.

Human beings are like composite bumpers in that they posses mouldmemory as well. The mould being referred to is of course original manufacture of cars and early childhood development in people. Both eventually become finished products. But both also get dented through use and though experiences in life.

We must never forget our capacity for resilience and the ability to bounce back in face of adversity. That is a gift too many of us forget we posses when insurmountable challenges seem to dominate our lives.

People who choose to remember experiences from their early years know that they have the innate ability to recover from set back and sorrow. They know that the sweet elixir of life is to be found in the process of becoming and not merely in the final results that efforts achieve.

Capistrano, the novel,
presents just such mould memory in its main characters as they struggle with their individual demons within

The Stream Of Life

Everyone has at one time or another visited a stream in the country on a warm summer day. So picture yourself standing beside this flow of water. You can hear song birds in the trees and the crisp, cool, mountain air is invigorating. You are alone in this sylvan setting and you are completely away from the hectic place called, THE WORLD.

The soothing sound of the gentle water fall fills the air with a cascade of serenity.

The water in front of you is clear.

You can easily identify the face of the person you are holding under the water.

Now....doesn't that make you feel better!!

This little story has been often repeated as a source of humor. It is all to modern a tale that juxtaposes the sublime and the cynical.

All too modern indeed!!

Let's bring value to this tale by giving it a didactic spin.

What if the face of the person you are holding under the water is not that of an adversary, but your own!!!

All too often we hold ourselves down or back from what we are truly capable of achieving.

Remember that we are all children of nature blessed with capabilities that not even we as individuals are aware of.

Stretch yourself, create new horizons and know that the thrill of self discovery is in the journey not the destination.

This is the main theme of CAPISTRANO, a novel about personal ambition and the road taken to realize the prize.
