The Promise Of Progeny

Here we have a woman riding a bicycle in a rural section of the country in which she lives. Her mode of dress and the fact that she is carrying kindling wood to start a fire for cooking suggests that life for her is a struggle.

The bike she is riding is old and it has only one gear. This makes it difficult to negotiate hilly terrain. Add to that the weight of the wood and you have hard physical exertion.

This is a study in self sacrifice.

And her daily toil and selfless giving are aimed at achieving one goal.

That goal is to ensure a better life for her progeny. She was born into a circumstance that dictated the events, large and small, of her life.

Her children, born sometime in the 1950's became a part of the "baby boom generation". They appreciated her efforts on their behalf, perhaps, but they definitely did not share her concept of life.

The novel CAPISTRANO, is a story for that generation and for their progeny as well. It is a tale for anyone who has wistfully dreamed of personal fulfillment.

For those who contemplate the shedding of the shackles of conformity, of repetitive task completion, of living to satisfy the expectation of others, Michael Campbell is a man well worth meeting.

Michael's singular focus on dream fulfillment both attracts and angers those around him. He is a fighter, he has a dream and he is bound and determined to see it come to fruition, no matter what the cost.

CAPISTRANO will make you laugh out loud, it will make you cry and, in the process make you think about your own present and what possibilities lie untapped within.

Boats That Fit The Water

Linger for a moment and look carefully at this anchorage of fishing boats close to the shore of the Flores Sea.

Phoenician in origin, they are examples of one of Archimedes' "eureka", I have found it, moments. The Greek mathematician and inventor determined that there was a relationship between the weight of water displacement caused by a vessel and the weight of the vessel itself. If the weight of the former was greater than the weight of the latter, flotation would occur.

So what do these boats, that are all facing into the wind, have in common.

They are all made from wood. Wood is a flexible material but it requires high maintenance. Paint, varnish, caulking.

Design, too. All have a high prow which allows them to weather hostile seas. All are outfitted with flying bridges, best seen on the stern of the boat on the extreme left of the photo, to allow the helmsman to navigate. All have a broad beam and deep hull to allow for storage of the catch.

And best of all, each is distinctive because each is painted in rich, vibrant colors.

Are there any similarities between the boats described above and people you might know, who lead distinctive, successful lives?

Michael Campbell is such a man. He is the main protagonist in the new novel, CAPISTRANO. Michael, like the boats, is made of the right stuff to not only weather any storm but also celebrate his successful return to his safe harbor.

Michael's boat of adventure does fit the water. Join him and share his journey.

Islands In The Stream

No Man Is An Island
No man is an island,
Entire of itself.

Each is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thine own

Or of thine friend's were.

Each man's death diminishes me,

For I am involved in mankind.

Therefore, send not to know

For whom the bell tolls,

It tolls for thee.
John Donne

To dream a dream of fulfillment is a singular domain to inhabit. One derives

pleasure from the continuous loop played out in the mind's eye of the desired

result. One sees oneself, with a delicious resolve, as an island in the stream

of life.

And so it was for Michael Campbell, the main character in the new novel,

CAPISTRANO. He shed the shackles of conformity. He stopped living to satisfy

the expectations of others. He became his own man in a foreign country as he

set out on a venture about which he knew nothing. All he possessed was drive

and ambition.

But no man is an island unto himself. He needed help. His singular focus

became a beacon to others. Some rafted together with him to his immense

benefit.

And others became steadfast in their attempts to sink him.

The price to achieve his prize was steep. Michael's piece of the continent was

diminished as death stalked those around him. But he soldiered on as only a

man on a mission can.

Michael's story will make you laugh out loud. It will make you cry. Most of all,

it will make you think about your present and the possibilities that lie

untapped within.

Unsquare Dance Encore

Unsquare Dance Encore

So, from the previous offering based on Brubeck's jazz melody, the question was asked, what is the total number of squares in the image above. The suggested total was 30 squares. One is the total diagram, 16 small ones, 9 composed of four adjacent small squares, and 4 composed of nine adjacent small squares. With overlap of course.

But some people claim that the diagram contains 25 more squares for a total of 55.

Where do they see the extra squares? Here is their story.

The spaces between the small squares, best seen in the diagram as illuminated lines dividing the image in half both vertically and horizontally tell the story.

Even if the lines that separate each of the squares are only microns thick, one millionth of a meter, where they intersect and where they connect with the boundary of the overall diagram, they do form microscopic squares.

Fantastic, you might think, yes. Logical, you must think, yes.

What we see in life is a function of what we have trained ourselves to see.

Ask a professional arborist about your favorite wood lot and you will get a detailed description of everything from the ground cover, to the spacing and variety of hard and soft wood trees, right up to the tree canopy as well as, no doubt, the interdependence among all of the flora living there. Details

Ask a trained geologist about an oft visited outcropping of rock and a story of the veins and seams that streak the surface of the rock as well as the rock's origins, igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic will unfold. Details.

Details add dimension to life's experiences.

And details derive from the doing. Get out to your "there" and focus on the details.

Become a Michael Campbell, the main character in the novel, CAPISTRANO. Fix your sights on a new horizon, a personal goal, and revel in the process of adding detail to desire.
